The general objective of LIFE is to contribute to the transition from an economy based on efficient use of resources, low carbon and resilient to the climate.

The project focuses on reducing GHG emissions of ceramic industries in the area of Castellón de la Plana using the CO2 captured in agriculture, promoting it as a natural sink for CO2 to enhance this residual gas by using it as acidifier in irrigation water.

Objectives:

• Develop a prototype in which CO2 emissions of an industrial installation are captured and the resulting carbonated water is used to irrigate crops.
• Demonstrate the feasibility of carbonic fertigation on citrus. Analyze the impact of the continued use of CO2 in the irrigation network in soil and plants.
• Design and implement techniques for proper CO2 dissolution in a drip irrigation system and monitor its implementation and dissemination in different plots.
• Assess the impact on root respiration, and thus on total organic matter content, of the carbonic fertigation.
• Quantifying the impact of carbonic fertigation on the use of chelates and other fertilizers.
• Study and develop options for capturing CO2 in industrial practices and their transfer to irrigated areas. Develop and Implement a system of circular economy through industrial symbiosis of two economic activities: industrial and agricultural, easily replicable in other areas of the EU.

CHALLENGES PROGRAM 2016

Mediterranean fruit fly or fruit fly (Ceratitis capitatan Weidemann) belongs to the order Diptera family Trypetidae. The adult fly is slightly less than the household size, has iridescent wings, smoked a spot color, and has phosphorescent flashes of bright colors. The female, unlike the male, has a prominent ovipositor. The eggs are elongated and slightly curved, white. Larvae are white, small and legless. The pupa is shaped like a barrel, with the smooth surface is brown.

The fruit fly is one of the most damaging pests affecting the Spanish agriculture. This plague is endemic in the Mediterranean area, affects both sweet fruits that ripen in late spring and summer, as early and late varieties of citrus. Its incidence has worsened further in recent years as a result of the expansion of cultivation extra early varieties of citrus, manifested extremely sensitive to attack by this parasite, reaching full maturity during the initial period of autumn, when often temperatures occur.

The project aims to develop a specific product residue 0 to combat fruit fly (Ceratitis capitatan Weidemann) based on the use of natural pyrethrins encapsulated with nanoparticles of mesoporous silica to allow controlled release of the active ingredient in the presence of a stimulus specific.

Thus, the project will start with a proven product with insecticide action and already put on the market by Nature IDAI based on extracts from natural substances whose active ingredient are pyrethrins and residue 0.

Numerous scientific studies have shown the benefits of the intake of extra virgin olive oil in health. These benefits have historically been attributed to the high concentration of monounsaturated fatty acids. However, recent studies suggest that the phenolic compounds present in the unsaponifiable fraction of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) could partially explain the beneficial effects of the Mediterranean diet, since these are not observed with other types of diets with an ingestion of oleic acid similar to that provided by olive oil. They emphasize its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties as well as its beneficial effects in reducing the risk of degenerative diseases such as atherosclerosis, cancer or Alzheimer's.

Among these phenols present in the EVOO, the Oleocanthal stands out. This molecule has been shown to have a potent anti-inflammatory effect similar to the mechanism of the ibuprofen molecule. In addition, it has exceptional properties such as antitumor and preventive of Alzheimer's disease.

These results make EVOO a highly beneficial food for health, so the main challenge is to promote its consumption in the population. In addition, if the EVOO comes from organic farming, it is free of chemical residues.

The quality and therefore the beneficial effects of EVOO are determined by their content of monounsaturated fatty acids and their concentration in these phenolic compounds. This quality is highly affected by the external conditions of exposure to O2 via oxidation and to the light decreasing significantly after the extraction process of the oily juice. Therefore, the conditions of processing and storage are decisive when it comes to obtaining a quality EVOO rich in oleocantal. Another determining factor in the concentration of oleocanthal is the variety of the olive.

Fertilife meeting to launch the project

On Wednesday October 14, 2015 took place in Valencia the launch meeting of the project LIFE CCM / ES / 000311. AGRICULTURAL FERTILIZATION WITH CERAMIC INDUSTRY EMISSIONS GHG

The project has a total budget of € 1,047,073 and is funded 60% by the EU, aims to develop a system to capture CO2 with water of a ceramic industrial installation and use the resulting carbonated water to irrigate a citrus grove.

La lactulosa es un azúcar artificial con importantes aplicaciones nutricionales y de gran interés farmacológico, ya que puede interferir en la digestión humana asegurando la salud intestinal además de utilizarse para combatir el estreñimiento crónico, la encefalopatía hepática, prevención de tumores, controlar el nivel de glucosa e insulina en sangre…además de para la fabricación de prebióticos.

Sistema digestivo

Actualmente el método de obtención de lactulosa es de bajo rendimiento y costoso debido en parte al alto coste de purificación de la lactosa. El proceso de obtención consiste en llevar a cabo la isomerización de lactosa en presencia de catalizadores básicos homogéneos empleando reactores discontinuos, lo que hace necesario introducir procesos de neutralización y necesitando la renovación del catalizador en cada ciclo.

El objetivo principal del proyecto es el de obtener un proceso de obtención de lactulosa empleando un reactor continuo junto con un catalizador heterogéneo que permita la utilización de lactosuero como fuente de lactosa y eliminar las fases de neutralización, la reutilización del catalizador, reducir la concentración de los residuos y reducir los costes de producción.

Desarrollo de un prototipo de electrolizador a partir de electrodos NiOx

La producción de hidrógeno a partir de la electrólisis del agua es una de las estrategias más prometedora para satisfacer la creciente demanda energética de forma sostenible.

Diferentes usos del hidrógeno obtenido por electrólisis

Actualmente los sistemas electrolizadores empleados en electrólisis principalmente utilizan electrodos recubiertos con óxidos metálicos de rutenio (Ru) e iridio (Ir) (RuOx e IrOx), los cuales son extremadamente caros debido a su escasez.

En esta situación la empresa presenta el proyecto ELECTRONiOx, que se basa en la sustitución de los óxidos metálicos actualmente utilizados por óxidos de niquel (NiOx) en los electrodos de electrolizadores industriales comerciales, principalmente para la obtención de H2 y O2 a partir de agua. También se pretenden implementar en la potabilización de agua mediante la producción en ánodo de hipoclorito sódico (NaClO), necesario para la potabilización de agua, y al mismo tiempo de H2 en el cátodo. El último objetivos es reducir la huella de carbono mediante el acoplamiento de paneles fotovoltaicos y reutilización del H2 producido para retroalimentar al electrocatalizador mediante una pila de combustible.

Los principales aspectos donde se obtienen ventajas son:
- Reducción de coste de la materia prima: El níquel es el segundo metal más abundante de la tierra, por lo que su precio es muy bajo.
- Proceso de fabricación: El método de fabricación es completamente escalable y compatible con técnicas de fabricación en continuo
- Rendimiento electrocatalítico: Material con resultados muy prometedores, alcanzando sobre potenciales en torno a los 290 mV a 10 mA/cm2 para la oxidación de agua a O2.
- Versatilidad: Posibilidad de variación de la composición de los electrodos para adaptarse a otras reacciones electroquímicas, gracias a la versatilidad del método de fabricación.
- Reducción costes de funcionamiento: Se pretende reducir en un 20-35% la demanda energética del electrolizador mediante paneles fotovoltaicos y retroalimentando el electrocatalizador mediante una pila de combustible alimentada con el H2 producido en los procesos electroquímicos.
